It has been reproduced since the nineteenth century, close to the city of Sint-Niklaas, to supply the neighborhood hide industry, and is along these lines one of the eldest hide rabbit types of the planet. The Van Beveren, likewise a hide rabbit breed, is family and has been reproduced in the same district of Flanders, the Waasland.

Universally, just blue mixed bags are acknowledged by the standard, in spite of the Van Beverens, where different mixtures are acknowledged. Likewise in as opposed to the Van Beverens, the weight of the Blue of Sint-Niklaas is much bigger, up to 12 lb (5.4 kg) demonstrating likeness to the Flemish Giant.

After the lessening of pelt-saling and hide commercial enterprises in the locale (and the planet) the breed came to be essentially wiped out, as it was not well known as a pet or meat-rabbit. Just a couple of European reproducers in Belgium and France are cleared out.
